At a Glance
The word. Two furnace names with a deliberately broad definition.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 5; facsimile PDF page 333.
Historical Definition
Anthonor, or Athonar, is a furnace.
Meaning
The entry names apparatus without specifying its form or fuel. It is consequently useful as a recognition aid, but insufficient for reconstructing a furnace. The nearby Athanor entry offers a fuller discussion within the spagyrical art; its resemblance in name invites comparison without erasing the exact spellings preserved here.
A reader should distinguish a general furnace reference from a named heating arrangement. Balneum Mariæ, for example, introduces water as part of its arrangement, while Reverberatorium names another apparatus family. Such qualifications matter more to the described work than a modern reader’s expectation that every furnace name denotes one standardized design.
Places to Read
Athanor. A spagyrical furnace whose use is not confined to one function.
Balneum Mariæ. A water bath used to warm vessels for several kinds of work.
Reverberatorium. A furnace defined by flame calcination.
