Aniadum

Mind soul and inward powers · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. The inward celestial or regenerated person described in sacramental terms.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 4; facsimile PDF page 332.

Historical Definition

Aniadum is a celestial body planted in us Christians by the Holy Spirit through the holy sacraments; or it is the spiritual person regenerated in us.

Meaning

This entry expressly locates its account within Christian belief. The celestial body is said to be implanted through the Holy Spirit and the sacraments, and the alternative formulation calls it the regenerated spiritual person. These are the historical author’s descriptions of inward renewal, not an anatomical specification. Both the sacramental agency and the alternative wording are necessary to its meaning.

The inward character may invite comparison with Adech, but the two definitions emphasize different things. Adech concerns mental representation and outward making; Aniadum concerns regeneration. The comparison is useful precisely because it prevents a broad category such as “inner person” from erasing the particular function of each term.

Places to Read

Aniada. A term linking heavenly gifts, Christian sacraments and life-preserving celestial influence.

Aniaday. An expression for everlasting renewal and the world to come.

Adech. The inward person who conceives the forms subsequently fashioned by the outward person.
