Chrysos

Metals minerals and metallic preparations · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. A direct name equivalence for gold.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 16; facsimile PDF page 344.

Historical Definition

Chrysos is gold.

Meaning

This short identification is a useful anchor among the more qualified gold expressions. It does not itself specify leaf gold, a liquor, a calx or another preparation. A passage may add those distinctions, and they should remain visible when translating the material name.

Aurum planatum, Aurum potabile and Calx Solis show different forms or conditions in the same broad gold family. The dictionary’s separate entries help the reader distinguish the metal named generally from a product identified by treatment or intended use.

Places to Read

Aurum planatum. Gold identified by being beaten into a thin form.

Aurum potabile. A purported gold liquor accompanied by a sharp criticism of its preparation.

Calx Solis. Gold distinguished by calcination.
