Anontagius

Elements principles and the natural world · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. A name referring to the philosophers’ stone.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 4; facsimile PDF page 332.

Historical Definition

Anontagius is the philosophers’ stone.

Meaning

The entry’s function is recognition: an unfamiliar word points to a better-attested family of philosophical vocabulary. It supplies no separate description of the stone, its stages or its preparation. Those belong under Lapis Philosophorum and in the text where Anontagius is used. Keeping the alias visible is valuable because it permits a reader to connect names across passages without treating the different wording as evidence for an additional substance.

Places to Read

Lapis Philosophorum. The philosophers’ stone defined through supreme terrestrial power and its imparting of tincture.

Cœlum Philosophorum. The philosophers’ heaven explained through quintessence and universal medicine.
