Historical Definition
Staraphaxat is a restraining or repercussive virtue.
Meaning
The definition describes an action rather than naming its material bearer. Restraining checks something; repercussive connects the power with the driving-back action described under Repercussiva.
Use in the Book
Repercussiva names medicines that drive back a flow. That entry helps explain the action word, though the present sentence does not identify one medicine or specify a particular flow.
Places to Read
Repercussiva. Medicines classified by their supposed action of driving a flow back.
In This Edition
The 1650 printing reads resinging; the transcription aid conjectures restringing. The modernised definition adopts restraining as an interpretation of that conjecture. This is a disclosed editorial reading, not the word printed in 1650.
