At a Glance

The word. Oil of tartar named in its highest stated degree of correction.

In the book. Oleum squaminum simply leads to oil of tartar, without the added qualification.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 36; facsimile PDF page 364.

Historical Definition

Oleum ardens is oil of tartar corrected to the highest degree.

Meaning

Correction describes a prepared condition, not the repair of an error in writing. The highest degree qualifies the oil beyond its base name, although the entry does not explain the stages by which that degree is reached.

Use in the Book

Oleum squaminum simply leads to oil of tartar, without the added qualification. Tartarum supplies a broader range of tartar-language. Reading these together keeps a plain material-name separate from a claim about the degree of its preparation.

Places to Read

Oleum squaminum. An alternative name for oil of tartar.

Tartarum. A wine-vessel deposit whose name also serves for bodily stones or gravel.
