At a Glance

The word. Three historical names for sal ammoniac.

In this edition. A textual note records the reading of the 1650 printing and the editorial treatment.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 4; facsimile PDF page 332.

Historical Definition

Anotasier, Aliocab and Alemzadar are sal ammoniac.

Meaning

The three spellings are explicitly grouped by the dictionary and should all lead to this entry. Their usefulness is particularly clear beside figurative names such as Aquila, where the material is associated with its behaviour in sublimation. An unfamiliar word in one passage and an eagle in another may thus belong to the same interpretive family, but the surrounding operation must establish the connection. This brief entry itself gives a name equivalence, not a manufacturing process.

Places to Read

Aquila. An eagle-name with more than one stated material meaning.

Myssadar. An alternative name for mercury.

Nysadir. An alternative name for sal ammoniac.
