Lemma.
Bergères are upholstered armchairs in the list of Renaudin’s furnishings. The noun does not refer here to shepherdesses, although the nearby tapestry bears a pastoral by Boucher. The literal chairs and the depicted pastoral coexist in the same sensuous room. The translation’s plain “armchairs” gives the local object clearly; a reader should not transfer the painted scene’s figures into the furniture inventory.
