Meaning
Synesis is understanding: the capacity to grasp what is involved in a subject or activity. Cheirourgia is handiwork, work performed with the hands. At 135b the text has their genitives, syneseōs and cheirourgias, after a phrase meaning “belongs to” or “has to do with.” The lover selects what belongs to understanding and excludes what belongs to handiwork. This is his proposed educational boundary, not a neutral statement that every craft consists of two fully separable departments.
Neither word should be silently translated into a later division between pure theory and applied science. Understanding here is displayed in following practitioners’ explanations and contributing a judgment about what they say and do. It is therefore intellectually active and connected to practice, even though the learner avoids acquiring a craft through manual performance.
Use in the book
The distinction is introduced to reconcile breadth with the standing of a free man. The cultivated lover wants wide familiarity, but not the sort of involvement that might identify him with a working craftsman. Socrates’ building example tests the demand at its strongest: perhaps he means the rare understanding of a top master builder as opposed to that of an ordinary carpenter. When Socrates asks whether even two crafts can be mastered on that scale, the lover clarifies that he does not require precision comparable to the practitioner’s.
The clarification exposes an ambiguity in “understanding.” It might initially suggest the directing intelligence that makes a master builder exceptionally valuable. It comes instead to mean a listener’s informed participation, superior to that of other nonspecialists but inferior to expert command. The pentathlete image resolves that ambiguity into a ranking. The philosopher is below the first in “understanding of the crafts” (136a), while above the rest.
This leaves a serious question for the usefulness test. Socrates treats inferior understanding as grounds for preferring a specialist in illness or a storm. The earlier distinction could have supported a complementary role for someone who interprets, compares or evaluates expert advice, but the lover does not develop such a defense. Calling this a possible reply identifies an opening in the argument; it does not attribute an unstated theory of interdisciplinary knowledge to the dialogue.
At the end, following and contributing return in the sphere of judging and ruling. The intellectual capacities originally offered as sufficient become a minimum: the philosopher must also undertake responsibility and judge rightly. The movement is from cultivated comprehension towards accountable action, without a claim that all manual proficiency is itself philosophical.

Translation in this edition
“Understanding” and “handiwork” preserve the immediate opposition without importing “theory” and “practice.” The edition’s building note helps mark the substantial difference between conceptual command and merely respectable conversation. The passage should nevertheless be read as a sequence of proposed interpretations and corrections, not as one settled account of technical intelligence.
