Meaning
The touchstone is a figure for discrimination: it tests a claimant or candidate without itself producing the desired substance. Khunrath gives it several forms, German Probstein, Latin basanus, and Nature's Lydian stone. The principal early test requires all the stated properties, qualities, and conditions to agree without forced interpretation.
Use in the book
Pages 39–402 tell readers to place their imagined materials beside the present treatise and Khunrath's other Nature-conforming writings. They must find ALL the relevant properties, not a convenient handful. The agreement must be unforced, not dragged in by the hair. Only then may they infer that they are on the road of truth and agree with the genuine Philosophers. The analogia harmonica here is between their candidate matter and Khunrath's matter as described. It is not yet the separately developed comparison between Magnesia and Christ.
The negative result matters as much as the positive. Page 43 says that discrepancies should lead the reader to acknowledge error and investigate more surely, rather than retain a pseudo-Magnesia for the genuine one. Its margin calls the procedure the touchstone of this dispute. The criterion is unusually demanding, but the text also limits what it makes publicly available: page 55 expressly withholds further requisites and properties. The test therefore directs recognition without offering the reader an exhaustive public specification from which the material can simply be decoded.
Later uses widen the object of the assay. At page 112 Nature's touchstone governs the interpretation of philosophical writings. At page 157 a demonstrator's speech is tested at Nature's Lydian stone, because the displayed effect alone does not establish philosophical knowledge. Page 138 combines the earlier all-circumstances requirement with the Christological harmony, as mutually supporting grounds for Khunrath's adherence to one matter. The recurring figure therefore joins material discrimination, textual interpretation, and assessment of personal authority. It also holds these distinct: matching a description, interpreting an author, and knowing how an effect was produced are different tasks.

- 1599 p. 40All stated properties must fit without force; the harmonic analogy compares the reader's candidate with Khunrath's Magnesia.
- 1599 p. 43 · margin2Basanus huius litis names the touchstone of the dispute, accompanying the instruction to reject a discrepant candidate.
- 1599 p. 55Further identifying properties are deliberately withheld, limiting the completeness of the publicly available test.
- 1599 p. 112Nature's touchstone becomes a standard for understanding philosophical writings.
- 1599 p. 138Agreement in all circumstances is joined to the distinct Christological harmony as a ground of adherence.
- 1599 p. 157Nature's Lydian stone tests the demonstrator's philosophical account as well as his displayed proof.
Translation in this edition
The modern note on page 56 loosely carries the phrase 'harmonic analogy' back to page 40. The primary wording requires a distinction: page 40 compares candidate matters; pages 56–572 compare Magnesia and the Stone with Christ. Both can participate in Khunrath's proof, but they should not be fused into one test at every occurrence.
Source note
The touchstone vocabulary invites an assaying analogy, not a new laboratory direction. No particular touchstone test of a modern candidate substance is supplied in this passage.
