Meaning

Warmth and cold are qualities with different roles according to the object and stage described. The dialogue distinguishes natural warmth within matter from outward heat that assists it; the Summary contrasts nourishing warmth with violent fire and damaging cold. Yet Nature also assigns cold a part in putrefaction. The family therefore cannot be reduced to “warmth good, cold bad.”

Heat, warmth and fire overlap without becoming interchangeable. Fire can name an agent, an inward power or an outward source of stimulation; warmth describes an effect or condition. Moisture is often paired with warmth because nourishment requires a relation of qualities, not simply an increase in intensity.

Use in the book

In Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 3 matter already possesses a natural warmth awakened by heaven. Nature uses it in the reception of a new form after the loss of a previous one. This formulation gives neither ordinary external heat nor the human worker exclusive formative power.

Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 5 describes inward incombustible warmth acting upon the coldness of quicksilver as it becomes one with its sulphur. The narrative then insists that moist is not without dry or dry without moist. The oppositions are interrelated within a developing constitution, not a list of isolated substances to be combined by arbitrary force.

Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 10 compares human generation with the limited assistance a worker can provide. Outward heat and the properly arranged work assist Nature, while the later discussion says that cold gives putrefaction. This claim belongs to the dialogue’s account of how qualities interact and should not be replaced by a supposedly universal instruction drawn from another source.

The Summary’s garden image supplies a different emphasis. Wind and cold have hindered the tree’s fruit; a more favourable place provides continuing light and dew. Too much heat without moisture dries fruit and prevents perfection, whereas warmth and moderate moisture nourish it. The author contrasts that natural nourishment with violent wood or charcoal fire. These statements are part of his analogy for the philosophical work, not a modern horticultural or chemical operating manual.

Translation

The English maintains “inward incombustible warmth,” “external heat” and “moderate moisture” as distinct phrases. Translating every one as a generic “fire” would erase the relation between principal inward activity and assistance. Conversely, the Summary’s “cold” should not be made identical in function with the dialogue’s cold that gives putrefaction. Their actual contexts establish different effects. This entry preserves those differences and avoids extracting a temperature, schedule or combined heating method from the comparisons.
