Meaning

Sublimation may name elevation and separation in the main treatise, a transformation assigned to Nature, or improvement interpreted by the Via as occurring within coction. The same learned word can also become a satirical verb for losing one's possessions up the chimney. Its presence does not prove a single agreed operation or warrant a modern laboratory definition in every context.

Upward movement and improvement are connected senses, but not identical. A passage may specify the lower becoming upper; another may emphasize the substance becoming better without a separately performed ascent. The object and governing agent decide which force is active.

Use in the book

Part II: matter and the work · unit 13 describes further sublimation as bringing the hidden heart and soul out of an initially rough and obscured matter into a lovely state. The movement belongs to the preliminary account of purification and manifestation. It is not presented as an unlimited virtue of making material rise at every stage.

Nature's Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 12 explicitly interprets turning the elements as subliming the lowest and making the highest lowest. The paired directions prevent sublimation from being understood as a one-way escape. Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 16 then gives the alchemist's account of Nature raising the prepared subject into air. He distinguishes human preparation and assistance from Nature's decisive work; the practitioner is not simply credited with creating elemental union by hand.

The Via's Way of Truth · unit 7 calls improvement of substance sublimation and multiplication, explaining these names as part of the ancients' obscuring language for plain coction. Way of Truth · unit 35 returns to the reflexive formulation: through coction the thing purifies, exalts, sublimes and dissolves itself. Its recommendation to abandon other named operations belongs to the same polemical redefinition.

Between those explanations, Way of Truth · unit 24 ridicules failed practitioners by saying they sublimed until pots and kettles flew up the chimney. The satire turns technical elevation into a figure for impoverishment, just as dissolving consumes money and putrefaction ruins clothes. It is not a sober report that intact kettles literally underwent successful sublimation.

Translation

The English retains the reflexive 'sublimes itself' in the Via's conclusion and 'improvement' in its explanatory passage, preserving the challenge to a separate human operation. It also leaves the chimney satire recognisably exaggerated. In Nature's instruction the downward counterpart remains beside subliming the lowest, so the lexical family does not mistake all elevation for permanent separation.
