The true Word is not a bare echo or empty sound, the author insists, but spirit and life and God's saving power for believers. This corrects a possible misreading of the earlier distinction between outward testimony and inward illumination. Hearing is neither outward alone nor inward in exclusion of outward preaching: the passage explicitly joins them. Its target is human chatter and adulterating glosses presented as divine teaching. The sound-life contrast therefore does not authorize dismissal of spoken Scripture as inherently dead. The phrase “empty sound” is attributed to contemptuous opponents and rejected; it is not the author’s own verdict on the Word.
