Meaning

Seven belongs both to regulated recurrence and to an enigmatic catalogue. The main prose associates it with distributing rather than overwhelming and with repeated ascent and descent. The latter count is expressly approximate, while the accompanying warning forbids haste. The riddle then gathers cities, metals, days, letters, words, times, places, herbs, arts and stones into sevenfold sets.

The English distinguishes the prose’s approximation from the poem’s patterned repetition. The riddle also introduces three and a half-related warning without explaining a complete numerical key. These are selected sevenfold structures, not proof that every seven in the volume encodes the same quantity or that the catalogue can be converted into a practical schedule.
