Meaning
Secret and mystery gather the German hidden-knowledge vocabulary together with the learned Arcanum. The latter is genuinely printed with initial capital in Part I: entrance and preparation · unit 2. A lower-case arcanum can be a normalized access label or English rendering, but must not be cited as an exact-case German attestation. This distinction concerns typography and evidence, not whether the term belongs to the historical work.
The secret is not merely undisclosed technical information. The title promises access to the universal tincture’s high mystery, while Part One calls the art holy because it represents the highest heavenly good. In Part Four, mystery belongs to scripturally framed speech through parables. Material, theological and rhetorical senses are linked without becoming identical.
Use in the book
The original title advertises matter named, way shown and process described. Its promise of disclosure coexists with the word secret. That combination is purposeful: printing a treatise does not mean that every reader can understand or rightly use what is written. Knowledge, divine assistance and correct interpretation remain central conditions.
Part One places the high and inexpressible secret beyond human command. Its access rests in God’s gracious will and mercy, not merely in intense willing or desire. The word Arcanum is consequently embedded in a devotional and ethical instruction to pray with faith, rather than presented as a standalone name for a bottled substance.
The motto opening Part Four promises to open the mouth in a parable and utter the mystery from the world’s beginning. Secrecy is therefore not simply the absence of speech. Figurative speech can reveal by making difficult heavenly matters imaginable while still requiring interpretation. The following comparison of earthly and heavenly Stones develops precisely that mode of disclosure.
The family should not be used to join every unknown or every later response’s initials to one alleged master code. A mysterious designation may be an unresolved abbreviation, a dramatic image, a guarded material name or a theological claim. The local syntax and speaker decide what kind of hiddenness is at stake.
