The special water is said to arise from the salty fatness of the earth. The phrase combines salinity with a fertile or rich earthly source; it does not name a modern salt solution or oil. The passage immediately guards against identifying this water with rain or an ordinary spring and can describe it, from another viewpoint, as dry and not wetting the hand. “Fatness” therefore participates in a deliberately paradoxical account of matter. Its presence is no warrant for treating all occurrences of salt, grease, and water in the volume as a single recipe.
