Meaning

Keeping back describes deliberate reservation within a later stage of the work. The prepared watery matter is not all committed at once; some is held while another part is joined with the solar body. The point is management of an already prepared material over time, not a separate ingredient or a prohibition of all later addition. The English “preserve and keep back” retains both guarding and withholding. The edition also notes that the printed partition is internally uneven. The retention verbs establish a distinction between holding back and committing material, but do not resolve that numerical difficulty. The surrounding injunction to observe Nature governs the action.
