Meaning

Rejected and lowly describe how the matter is regarded, not necessarily an intrinsic lack of worth. The main prose and riddle contrast common disregard with exceptional value and the failure to recognize what lies close at hand. The conclusion adds that sufficient matter can be obtained widely without great difficulty; availability is not the same as understanding.

The allegory applies the contrast to Christ and God’s saving Word, said to be despised by the greater part of humanity. This is the author’s indictment of reception, not his own valuation of Christ as worthless. The English preserves ‘regarded’ and ‘considered’, while the conclusion’s cheapness claim excludes food and maintaining the fire. The entry therefore distinguishes low esteem, apparent lowliness, accessibility and claimed value.
