Meaning
Protection and endurance describe relations between a body, its constituents and an agent such as fire. They are not invariably the same as inertness: some matter is said to improve in fire, while another survives because a protective liquor remains united with it. Resistance can also name a metal’s ability to confront swallowing Mercury. The object of the verb must determine the sense.
The family is especially useful because the texts distinguish ordinary visible fire from elemental fire. A claim that liquor protects fire from burning is deliberately paradoxical under everyday usage but locally intelligible within Via’s account of fire joined to moisture. It should not be converted into a modern fireproofing method.
Use in the book
Nature contrasts the bungler’s matter, soon dispersed or consumed, with her own material, which withstands trial and is improved by fire. The contrast supports her rebuke of imitation without understanding. It does not authorize a reader to test unknown matter through increasingly severe exposure.
In the Summary, the flying lion-Mercury swallows metals, but gold and silver can resist it. Even when they are swallowed and hidden in its belly, the text distinguishes swallowing from consumption: their perfection and hardness prevent destruction. Resistance here concerns preserved identity within the image, not a blanket inability to enter conjunction.
Via gives a different mechanism. Coction unites fire and water so that liquor protects elemental fire. Where the union is deficient, the liquor departs in white smoke and the remaining essence burns with earth. Whiteness in that account is not automatically a sign of successful completion. The later eagle passage describes inseparability and endurance in ordinary fire as the intended result. The stated protection belongs to a correctly understood union, not to any moist material at any stage.
These examples therefore need separate subjects and speakers. Nature’s enduring matter, the Summary’s resistant noble metals and Via’s protective liquor overlap in concern but are not interchangeable definitions or a jointly authored set of directions.

Translation
The English keeps “swallows” distinct from “does not consume” in the Summary, preserving a negation essential to the argument. Via’s “protector has fled” gives agency to the liquor and explains why the remainder cannot endure. In Nature’s speech, “improved in the fire” is stronger than merely “survives”: the translation rightly preserves that claimed benefit. The entry records these historical relations without treating them as independently verified physical laws.
