Meaning

The patriarchs supply an imagined early history of possession and transmission. The prologue confidently says the secret was revealed to Adam and inherited by ancient fathers, explaining health, longevity and wealth. The later benefits section more explicitly attributes such a belief to certain godly philosophers and says biblical figures were reported to have benefited.

The English preserves that difference between direct assertion and reported belief. No biblical process for manufacturing the stone is thereby supplied. The prologue also denies escape from bodily death, so the patriarchal example concerns a longer mortal life. ‘Inheritance’ here is the main author’s account of transmission, not an independently established documentary succession.
