The First Response’s mountain is small and great, gentle and soft yet exceptionally firm and hard, near to everyone and far away. These paired qualities make an ordinary geographical identification difficult and stress that proximity does not ensure access. The mountain is expressly invisible by divine counsel.
The English preserves the pairs and their conjunctions instead of choosing one side as the literal description. They belong to the response addressed to two recipients singled out for their diligence, not to a general measurement of a physical mountain. The passage offers no dimensions, hardness test or coordinate, and the paradoxes should not be ‘solved’ by supplying them.
