The obedience and merit in Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 3 belong to Jesus Christ. The sentence says that through them he redeemed the human race from eternal death and won the kingdom of heaven. Its grammatical subject must not be transferred to the seeker, as though human obedience earned the hidden art or salvation. The English “his obedience and merit” makes that attribution explicit. The clause supports the claim that Christ is the highest good and hardest divine mystery to comprehend, for which bodily figures may provide assistance. It is therefore both a statement of saving agency and part of the author’s justification of the spiritual comparison.
