Meaning

Moses on Sinai and Elijah fleeing Ahab are named among the main treatise's examples of forty. Their fasts are placed beside Christ's wilderness fast and other durations, including Israel's wandering and Jerusalem's destruction. Ahab is present as the person from whom Elijah flees, not as another fasting exemplar. The English supplies Elijah and Ahab for the historical forms Elias and Achab. The unit's purpose is numerical and typological association; it does not retell the episodes, establish a historical chronology by independent evidence or give the names a chemical identity.
