Sawerteig is leaven or sourdough, one of the familiar earthly things listed as vehicles of Christ’s teaching. It appears with seeds, grain, treasure and pearl in the main author’s explanation of why parables assist understanding. The unit names the example without expounding a particular leaven-parable in detail.
The English ‘leaven’ gives the relevant scriptural sense. Its appearance here should not be used to supply an ingredient for the book’s material fermentation, or to make every occurrence of fermentation a direct biblical quotation. The shared generative association can aid comparison, but this word’s actual local work is to establish a precedent for figurative instruction.
