The title page names Iohan von Mesung among appended works, while the Nature dialogue’s heading attributes its demonstration to Johann von Mehung. Inside the dialogue Nature herself refers to the Romance of Ioannis de Meung as approving her and rejecting sophists. These are three printed designations in different textual roles: a contents notice, an authorship attribution and a cited authority. The English regularizes them towards Johann or Jean de Meung. Such regularization is useful for retrieval but is not independent authentication of the companion’s authorship. The entry therefore preserves the spelling differences and the fact that the Romance is cited inside a dramatic speech.
