Meaning

An uninscribed inverted triangle is displayed beneath the riddle about a common yet unrecognised thing that flows like water without wetting. It is figure evidence, not an attested German word for an ingredient. The edition's note 45 interprets it as the conventional water-sign and as continuing the threefold theme; that explanation belongs to the modern apparatus. The historical riddle itself moves among colour, weight, recognition, dissolution and closure. The figure can guide attention to that setting, but neither its shape nor the note warrants inventing an additional substance or a complete decoding of the poem.
