Nature calls her union of contrary elements a golden chain and describes herself as adorned in a circle with heavenly virtues and substantial forms. The chain is thus an image of ordered connection: the passage ties natural transformation to heavenly assistance and to Nature's exclusive ability to proportion the elements. Its gold is honorific and imagistic here, not an instruction to use a metal chain or a statement of elemental composition. The surrounding challenge asks how a human worker could obtain the needed influence independently. The chain makes visible the relation that the boastful practitioner cannot manufacture by handling alone.
