Meaning
Fire is a family of qualified powers and aids, not a single substance used uniformly across the volume. Ordinary, external, vegetable, natural, heavenly and elemental fires occupy different relations in the companion texts. Sometimes fire means a visible source of heat; elsewhere it names an inward principle, the active aspect of an essence, or a higher agency awakening another fire. The adjective and the speaker are indispensable.
Natural, contrary-to-nature and unnatural also occur as named distinctions in Nature's instruction, together with non-burning fire and paired elemental qualities. That list demands discrimination but does not explain every term sufficiently to supply a definitive modern taxonomy.
Use in the book
Nature's opening rebuke in Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 1 attacks the alchemist's fierce reverberating fire and failure to distinguish common volatile quicksilver from her metallic principle. In Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 5 she says that her heavenly fire awakens elemental fire and describes generation through inward incombustible warmth. Her rejection of charcoal, smoke, a bath and the sophists' furnaces belongs to the superiority of her own operation, not to a universal assertion that no human assistance is ever needed.
Nature’s Demonstration to the Erring Alchemist · unit 10 explicitly restores that assisting role: Nature and the worker must perfect the work together, with the human supplying appropriate fire and arranging vessel and furnace. The text distinguishes the form of equipment from substantial or accidental form. This is a carefully bounded practical office, not the worker's mastery over Nature's internal generation.
The Summary's Philosophical Summary · unit 2 contrasts an external fire, called vegetable, with Mercury's hidden natural fire. The dragon-image emphasizes poisonous vapour, so it cannot responsibly be converted into an invitation to reproduce a visible effect. Philosophical Summary · unit 8, however, calls for a clear, bright, sunlike fire rather than violent wood or charcoal fire, using a garden and nourished fruit to distinguish preserving warmth from destructive heat. These formulations must be kept in their respective arguments.
The Via's Way of Truth · unit 15 identifies essence with elemental fire and liquor with elemental air, while allowing ordinary fire to assist deficient coction. Way of Truth · unit 28 explains sulphur, Sun and soul as names assigned to elemental fire, and contrasts invisible elemental principles with tangible external fire and water. Its criticism of misleading names is a different theory of explanation from Nature's or the Summary's.

Translation
The English preserves the contrasts 'heavenly ... elemental', 'external ... inward natural', and 'outward, substantial ... spiritual and invisible'. Replacing all of them with 'heat' would destroy the local accounts of agency; treating every occurrence as a code for one modern chemical would be equally unwarranted. The curious technical names in Nature's list are retained separately because the source does not securely gloss them one by one.
