The universal sea-water is said to moisten and make the entire earth fruitful through its swift, evenly flowing ebb and flood. The paired movements characterize circulation and fertility, while the same water is praised as surpassingly clear and luminous. This is the special water of the treatise's account, not an instruction to substitute ordinary seawater. English “ebb and flood” makes the alternating motion intelligible but should not be read as a measured tidal theory or as a separate timetable for the work.
