The “golden grasp” is skill in discerning the Word, not a golden object to be held. Part IV: the spiritual comparison · unit 10 requires readers to examine themselves and open the eyes of mind and soul through the inward light God has kindled. Merely outward, literal looking can mistake Saul for Paul and draw a wrong path from a sound text. The author expressly locates the fault in the reader’s eye, not the Word or letter. English “golden art of discerning” makes the practical sense of Grieff intelligible, though the more literal “grasp” remains a useful lookup. Inward illumination here does not discard Scripture: the passage declares Scripture the source from which this knowledge is obtained.
