Investigation and contemplation are paired as fruitful approaches to the art's principles. The main treatise says that rightly understanding these beginnings leads toward knowledge of God's wonders and away from worldly display. A later brief notice invites the children of wisdom to consider the preceding difficult numerical indication further; the brevity is an invitation to reflection, not a claim that everything is immediately plain. In the benefits section, seeing and recognizing created wonders is distinguished from merely staring at them. Contemplation therefore involves discriminating understanding and a changed valuation of what is seen.
