Meaning

The spirit praised in the Stone is called the spirit of the fifth essence beneath the circle of moonlight. The phrase locates its scope within the treatise's cosmological language; it is not a drawing instruction or the ring seen around the matter elsewhere. The paragraph then magnifies the spirit as sustainer of heaven, mover of the sea, and king among other spirits. These are the philosophers' commendations as reported by the author. The same English “moonlight” appears in the Second Response, but that later narrative concerns dazzled sight, not this cosmological boundary.
