The First Response of 1661 places fierce beasts and birds of prey around the mountain's priceless treasure. Their presence is attributed to the devil's envy, and they make an already dark route dangerous. Later lions, dragons and other dreadful beasts confront the recipients after the mountain appears. The promised conductor's protection answers their threat, but their appearance does not mean that the treasure has already been uncovered. These creatures mark obstruction, fear and the need for steadfast guidance within the response's narrative. Neither passage assigns them individual substances, persons or a stable cipher alphabet.
