Meaning

Reverberation is the return or reflection of an action upon a surface; penetration is entrance into the inward subject. The distinction matters because external warmth can be mistaken for the life-bearing agency operating within a body. The book also uses reverberation in the vocabulary of art, where an externally applied action assists a process whose desired effect lies deeper.

Use in the book

II.2 distinguishes the sun's exterior action from the central heat it attracts or awakens. Wells and cellars in winter illustrate an inward warmth that cannot simply be equated with the immediate heat of the visible rays. The argument does not deny the sun's role. It denies that this role is adequately described as the sole production of all inner heat by an exterior surface-effect.

II.3 adapts the contrast to purification. The discussion passes from sacred water and the Spirit's fire to material analogies of heat and subsequent separation. The divine Spirit’s rays heat the inward globe of the human heart and consume the old Adam’s tainted affections; chymical fire’s action on a natural subject is the ensuing comparison, followed by separation. The agencies and recipients are not interchangeable. Reverberation names a mode of assistance within this account, not a guarantee that any externally heated material has attained the inward transformation.

The distinction protects the treatise's larger preference for causes and powers over appearances. A hot surface can be an effect without being the complete cause of life; likewise, the occurrence of an operation does not by itself prove that the desired centre has been reached.

Translation

The English words 'reverberation' and 'penetration' retain the author's opposition rather than supplying modern heat-transfer categories. In II.3.16 the theological and material sequences are analogous but not identical: Christ's cleansing blood and the Spirit's action should not be transformed into names for laboratory substances. The adjacent material discussion can be explained without reconstructing an operational sequence.
