Purger & restaurer tout ensemble makes two functions necessary together. The author does not reject purging as such; he objects that removal alone may leave the powers of life unrepaired, or remove matter without reaching the relevant disorder. Restoration is praised as the neglected part of medicine because it replenishes and strengthens rather than simply empties. The contrast prepares the search for a more perfected preserving subject. Calling its preparation above ordinary Nature does not by itself make it a miraculous suspension of natural causality. These are historical claims about proper medical art, not a regimen or endorsement of purgative treatment.
