Meaning

Mercure ou Iris are swift divine messengers whom human thought outstrips in Philon’s praise of intellect. The comparison measures mental reach and speed, not the movement of a substance through a vessel or a claim of literal travel into the heavens. Mercury here must therefore be distinguished from planetary Mercury in the list of astral qualities and from universal mercury as a generative subject. Iris is a partner in the messenger comparison, not a colour-stage term simply because her name elsewhere can evoke a rainbow.
