Meaning

Within II.4 S008, the supplied French reads medication in the first formulation of creation through one, then meditation in the following explanation of divine thought. Note 200 reports the two forms as clear on consecutive source images, FR241 and FR242. The new English retains “medication” and “meditation” rather than substituting “mediation” or importing the familiar wording of another Emerald Table version.

The difference is therefore material evidence for reading this edition. It does not by itself prove that the author developed an explicit theory contrasting two technical terms, nor authorise a general correction of every Hermetic quotation. Elsewhere, I.4 and Sonnet III retain meditation in their own wording. A reader should follow each occurrence before proposing an interpretive relation among them.

Places to read

  1. Book Two · Chapter 4 · Unit 8Nuysement reads Pimander, Asclepius and the Emerald Table as sacred philosophy, finding what seems to him a prophecy of regeneration through Christ. The one subject perfected by adaptation mirrors divine action. Sun and moon communicate celestial powers through mediating air into earth; the spirit retains its entire strength on embodiment, as Christ retains his divinity in becoming human.
  2. Book One · Chapter 4 · Unit 4Hermes touches universal and particular strings: general one/spirit differs from mineral single thing produced within earth.
  3. Sonnet 3 · Unit 1Under a heading identifying the poem as an exposition of Hermes’ Table, one above and below supports marvellous effects by adaptation. Meditation, ordered parentage and nurture lead to the thing’s entire power when tinged into earth. Separation of subtle from thick and earth from fire precedes ascent and descent receiving both powers.
