Life deprived of the blessings under discussion becomes an odious languor and a ship battered on a tumultuous sea before the dark abyss of death swallows it. The connective “without these blessings” ties the image to bodily health and worldly sufficiency; it is not an unrelated maxim about navigation. Book III’s praise of preservation does not abolish death, which remains the ultimate limit in the surrounding argument. The transmitted layout interrupts the continuing sentence with sonnet leaves, but that interruption does not create a new referent for the endangered vessel or a new speaker.
