Meaning

Intelligence divine and intellect ideal designate directing intellectual agency. Brute matter is matter considered without that intelligence, not morally vicious matter. The contrast concerns the source of ordered formation, renewal and multiplication of forms.

Use in the book

I.2.1 reasons that effective elevations, renovations, mutations, variations and multiplied forms cannot proceed from matter's own unintelligent character alone. They disclose divine intelligence working in the world. The argument is inferential: observed or asserted ordered changes are taken as signs of a higher cause, rather than the divine intellect being presented as a bodily object inspected directly.

I.9.1 further differentiates the levels of agency. Ideal intellect is not itself dragged into the material forms. Heavenly ideas and the soul's seminal reasons direct formation, while spirit carries the powers into matter. This gives intelligence a causal priority without making it simply another ingredient alongside water, earth or sulphur.

The distinction matters wherever the work personifies Nature as a wise artisan. Her skill is not a claim that unintelligent matter independently originated its own order, nor does calling art ingenious make the human practitioner the creator of species. It also prevents the phrase “secret intelligences” in III.16 from being misread as another occurrence of this faculty: in that hostile military metaphor, diseases and poverty enter covert agreements. The same lexical family has a different historical sense there.

Translation

The translation uses “divine intelligence” and “ideal intellect” for the directing terms, while III.16 correctly gives “secret agreements” for secrettes intelligences. That checked difference is a useful retrieval control: an English search for intelligence must not force cognition into a passage about conspiracy.
