Meaning

Demogorgon is a named personification of the power administering generation, not an ingredient-name. His cloak or mantle, throne and heart give this invisible administration a visible setting. The green covering, ferruginous rust and darkness must be read as attributes interpreted by the author, not as an independently recoverable recipe hidden behind a mythological name.

Use in the book

I.1 depicts an ancient progenitor presiding over the world's generative treasury. The allied names Iliaste and Archee distinguish supply from digesting action: provision of matter does not itself complete a living product. Demogorgon's central position makes him a steward of resources and powers, while divine thought remains the superior origin of the order he administers.

II.1 returns to the central throne while explaining fire's activity and the ascent of moist vapour. His empire is over generation within the sublunary world, not an assertion that every deity or heavenly power is simply the same physical fire. II.4 subsequently supplies the explicit interpretation: Demogorgon is the spirit of the world obeying the Lord. The green cloak and rusty covering evoke the earth's surface, its obscurity and vegetation, while inward life resides beneath that exterior.

The later Pan comparison broadens this reading without making every name a strict synonym. Pan may signify the same all-generating spirit; the Orphic hymn voices powers appropriate to that interpretation. Thus the god's age, dress and central seat are parts of a continuous argument about hidden, distributed life. They should neither be detached as decorative classical learning nor taken as evidence for an actual subterranean person.

  2. Book Two · Chapter 1 · Unit 2Personified central father and governor whose fruitful bosom roots fire. Government imagery explains regular distribution to every member of the sphere.
  3. Book Two · Chapter 4 · Unit 29Demogorgon is explicitly decoded as universal spirit at the terrestrial/world centre; the cloak is earth’s dark, vegetated surface.

Translation

The source's own explanation in II.4 is firmer evidence for the cloak than a free modern allegorical decoding would be. The English 'world-spirit' consequently names the author's proposed referent, while his conditional extension to Pan remains conditional. The earlier language of purveyor, steward and digesting power also warns against transferring every action of Iliaste or Archee indiscriminately to Demogorgon.
