Christ’s precious blood is called the true water on the theological side of an explicit comparison. It washes vice and the death associated with the earthly father’s corruption; natural water, likewise, dissolves and separates the material dregs that engender corruption in substances.
The parallel keeps distinct agents and recipients. The Holy Spirit’s fire purges sin, while chymical fire treats a natural subject; the latter’s subsequent separation is assigned to distillation. “Just as” and “likewise” do not make a chymical liquid into Christ’s blood or a laboratory operation into a sacrament. The point is correspondence in purification and regeneration, not identity of material or religious action.
