Chaux is the calx or calcined material of a fixed body in II.3.32, not necessarily the substance now ordinarily called lime. Its function is defined relationally: the state of the body and the behaviour of its dregs determine what can be retained or separated. The argument includes “only when” and an exception where the dregs remain by themselves; it is not an unconditional assertion that every calcined body behaves alike. This local vocabulary helps the reader understand the classification of operations without translating it into an executable preparation.
