Compulsory mobilisation of people or resources for public purposes. During Trubert’s last illness, the narration contrasts voluntary enlistment with requisition as a way to produce a large, disciplined army; the word is not merely a request for supplies. Longuemare’s earlier account applies the same family to horses taken for army service. Its immediate object therefore matters: the novel uses it of human recruitment as well as material resources.
