Lemma.
Grille is a barred partition or gate. At the Conciergerie it separates men’s and women’s quarters without entirely preventing hands and mouths from meeting. The object both confines and permits contact. Brotteaux’s last encounter with Thévenin ends in a kiss through it, so the barrier never becomes a complete metaphorical erasure of bodily relationship.
