Meaning

The preceptor is a person who knows and communicates the Art under an obligation of gratitude and fidelity. Khunrath also calls his own instructor a knowledgeable master. These descriptions provide evidence of personal teaching, but do not identify a particular teacher by name.

Use in the book

At pp. 41–422 the author says he has been instructed by God, Nature and a well-knowing master, to whom he wishes eternal good. Page 135 names a human schoolmaster as one route by which the philosophers came to know. Later the p. 177 margin makes the narrative personal again: God has indeed joined such a helpful man to Khunrath.

The oath sequence adds the relationship's moral structure. Voluntary promises are made to the preceptor under ancient philosophical usage, and p. 149 says he is to be revered in a parent's stead. The accompanying warning against forgetting a benefit makes gratitude more than a polite compliment. Recognition is received through a relation that continues to bind the learner's conduct.

The teacher's role does not eliminate divine assistance or the testing of reasons. The book invokes both alongside human instruction. Nor does it supply a school register, curriculum or complete oath from which a formal institution could be reconstructed.

Translation in this edition

Do not replace the unnamed master with a biographical candidate drawn from outside the passage. “Preceptor” retains the personal and ethical authority that the narrower word “instructor” can lose.

Source note

The wish for the master’s eternal welfare begins in a sentence crossing pp. 41–422. It is not a printed death notice from which the teacher’s date of death can be inferred.
