Lemma.
An expedient is a devised practical means. Brotteaux calls virtue a simple expedient for living comfortably together, grounding it in human coexistence rather than natural command. He first says virtue ought to be loved; the noun therefore reduces its metaphysical status without eliminating its practical value.
