English renderings
longed for; desired

Meaning

This adjective praises Night, Victory, Persephone, Law and other powers as objects of longing. The seasons are likewise desired in Adonis’s hymn. A dative often identifies those who desire them, as in θνητοῖσι, “by mortals”; the superlative forms heighten desirability without making the deity the one who longs.
