much-toiling; full of hardship

Meaning

The compound frequently characterizes mortal life as burdened with labour. Yet Demeter rejoices in works involving much toil (XL.4), so effort is not always presented only as calamity. The adjective can belong to people or their work, including the toil-marked old man in Health’s hymn.
