Meaning

The Nymphs delight in play (LI.14), while Pan's song is playful as it sounds the cosmos's harmony (XI.6). The latter adjective belongs to the song, not to a newly named class of worshippers. Playfulness can therefore characterize an activity as well as its divine participants.
