spring; source

Meaning

Thalassa’s hymn uses πηγή for a spring teeming with the Nymphs’ streams (XXII.8). The Titans are instead “beginnings and springs” of mortals (XXXVII.4), where water-source language expresses generation. The two passages share the idea of an origin from which something issues, without making the Titans literal fountains.
